Applied Music/Performance

Applied Music/Performance
The Applied Music/Performance degrees prepare students for a variety of careers by developing motivated and creative musicians. Students pursuing the Applied Music/Performance degrees will improve and hone technical skills through guided practice and self-discovery. These students are encouraged to explore their individual voice while developing a deeper understanding of musical culture and are shown how to integrate practical personal and entrepreneurial skills into their life as a musician. In collaboration with their studio faculty advisor, students audition for and participate in the ensembles that will best suit their career goals.
Our performance faculty are active performers and talented educators who mentor students in a variety of specialties including performing solo, in large ensembles, and in chamber groups. Opportunities for individual student performance include weekly studio repertoire class, elective studio recitals and required solo recitals. Our students regularly attend, compete, and perform in regional and national competitions, conferences, and workshops.
Student Opportunities
Students pursuing the Applied Music/Performance degrees complete Private Study with their assigned studio faculty advisor for each semester: undergraduate students with the Bachelor of Music in Applied Music complete eight semesters, and graduate students in the Master of Music with a Concentration in Performance complete four semesters. Both graduate and undergraduate students can also audition for and choose to study on a secondary instrument after they have been admitted.
In addition to mandatory ensemble participation, many students choose additional ensemble enrollment as one way to expand their performance opportunities. Undergraduate students may choose to complete an Applied Music minor with their secondary instrument. All students will work with the School of Music Academic Advisor to create an academic plan to craft a UD experience that can include elective coursework.
Please review our Performance Studios to learn more about our associated faculty. Students can complete Applied Music/Performance degree requirements with one of these concentrations:
