PROGRAM: Ph.D., Oceanography

Thanks to the Graduate College and the School of Marine Science and Policy for the Student Travel Award, which allowed me to attend and deliver my first oral presentation at an international conference. I presented my work at the 2025 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting, held in New Orleans. My presentation focused on a chapter of my PhD research examining microbial communities and surfactant production in the sea surface microlayer. It highlighted specific phytoplankton and bacterial taxa that may be important predictors of surfactant production, as well as surfactant influence on air-sea interactions that affect Earth’s climate. I received positive feedback and suggestions that broadened the impact of my research. I also had the opportunity to meet with collaborators and expand my scientific network.
