Zachary Grass

Biography

Zack Grass is a music educator, performer, and instrument builder residing in Rhode Island. Originally from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Zack has been very fortunate to perform all over the East Coast, Canada, and Austria and has worked with artists such as Jeff Coffin from the Dave Matthews Band, Trombone Shorty, and the Queens of the Stone Age.

An active freelance musician, Zack frequently performs with groups such as the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Symphony New Hampshire, The Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, The Orchestra on the Hill, Live Nation Tours, the Southcoast Brass Band, The Orchestra Now, and is a founding member of the tuba and euphonium group, the Keystone Quartet, a group dedicated to commissioning and recording new works for tuba and euphonium ensemble. As a passionate advocate of new music, Zack has composed and commissioned new works for tuba, tuba with mixed media, and tuba/euphonium ensemble and has given masterclasses on the importance and necessity for performers to create their own music.    

As an educator, Zack has worked as a teaching assistant at both East Carolina University and Boston University working with both universities’ tuba and euphonium studios and their Athletic Bands. He was the low brass instructor at the Cumberland Valley School of Music (PA) and currently teaches tuba lessons at St. Paul’s School and the Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA. Recently, Zack filled in as a sabbatical replacement instructor at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania teaching lessons to tuba and euphonium majors, conducting the tuba and euphonium ensemble, and leading the group to performances at the North East Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference held in Boston, MA.  

Dr. Grass holds degrees in Music Performance from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (BFA , 2014), East Carolina University (MM, 2016), and Boston University (DMA, 2022).
