Become a Resident or Apartment Assistant

Resident Assistants and Apartment Assistants are student leaders on-campus who help support students in our residence halls. Student staff not only help to build community but also enforce our residence hall regulations and policies, serve in the on-call rotation and assist in move-in and move-out. Here you will discover more about the Resident Assistant and Apartment Assistant positions and how to apply.

The 2026-2027 New Student Staff application is currently closed.

It will open in Fall 2026.

Resident Assistants and Apartment Assistants

Resident Assistants (RAs) focus on engagement, planning/hosting programming and building a community in the residence halls.

Apartment Assistants (AAs) focus more on administrative tasks, facilities management and office operations.

Both positions assist with check-ins and check-outs, policy enforcement, health and safety duties, conflict management and supporting residents. We encourage you to read the job descriptions for both positions and attend an information session to learn more about the differences between the roles.

Information Sessions

Our student staff positions are very rewarding, but are also unlike most other on-campus jobs. Information sessions can help you decide if one of our student positions is right for you.

Fall 2026 Information Sessions

Schedule will be available in the fall semester.

Additional Information

Eligibility

  • You must maintain a minimum 2.5 semester and cumulative GPA.
  • You do not have to currently live on campus to be eligible! But be sure you can demonstrate:
    • Active involvement in a residence hall community for at least one semester or
    • Related experience working with other students or organizations, managing conflict or building relationships
  • Candidates needing to complete intensive academic commitments (such as clinicals or student teaching) within their first year of employment will not be eligible.

Selection Process Preparation

  • Attend an info session! You can also attend a resume and interview preparation workshop through the Career Center.
  • While we expect our successful candidates to have contributed to a residential community, we value the outside involvement enjoyed by many of our candidates. Consider how your participation in clubs, internships, employment and academic experiences can translate to being a successful staff member.
  • All applicants will provide a resume and answer several short essay questions. We recommend completing the questions in a Word or Google doc, then copying and pasting them into the application.
  • Interviews take place near the start of the spring semester. Successful applicants will receive an email in February to schedule their interview.
  • Changes cannot be made to an application after submission.

After You are Hired

  • Orientation will be held in late April with your supervisor and fellow student staff. RA Training is required for all staff and typically begins in mid-August.
  • The RA and AA positions are time-intensive and should be a top priority. However, we encourage our student staff to maintain involvement in other activities.
  • Student Staff looking to work outside of the RA or AA position (on or off campus) will require prior approval.

Compensation

  • RAs and AAs receive a room waiver and stipend.
  • Compensation may affect your financial aid. Consult with Student Financial Services prior to accepting a position to understand how it could impact your aid package.

Other Information

  • If you want to live on campus regardless of whether you are offered a position, you must complete the housing application by the deadline.
  • RAs are required to purchase a meal plan. Discounted plans are available for RAs and they will be enrolled in and billed for this plan automatically, but they can opt for a more expensive plan.
AAs are not required to have a meal plan.
  • RAs in traditional halls have a single room. Those in suite-style halls will have an RA as their suite-mate.
AAs will share an apartment in University Courtyard Apartments with other AAs.
  • Staff who share a suite or an apartment cannot select suitemates or apartment roommates.
