Moving Out of Your Residence Hall
The residence hall move-out process can differ at the end of each term. As the time to move out approaches, more details will be available here so you know what you need to do during checkouts.
What You Need to Know for Moving Out
Move-Out Basics
Students living on campus are required to check out of their rooms at certain times of the year, whether for an academic break, the end of an academic term or when leaving during the academic term due to a withdrawal or release from contract.
Fall
All residence halls (except apartments) close at the end of fall semester, typically at 10 p.m. on the last day of final exams.
Traditional or Suite-Style Rooms - Returning for Spring Semester
- Return your key/fob to staff and vacate within 24 hours of your last final exam, and no later than the posted closing time.
- You may leave your belongings in your room.
- If you have an eligible circumstance, such as a late final exam, you can request a late stay through 10 a.m. after the halls close.
Apartment-Style Rooms - Returning for Spring Semester
- You retain access to your room between semesters.
Not Returning to the Same or Any Room
- Fully vacate with all belongings and return key/fob to staff by the posted closing time.
More details will be posted to this page and emailed to students closer to move-out.
Spring
All residence halls (including apartments) close at the end of the spring semester, typically at 10 p.m. on the last day of final exams.
All Students Living on Campus
- Fully vacate your room and return your key/fob to staff within 24 hours of your last final exam, and no later than the posted hall closing time.
- Remove all personal belongings and trash from your room and shared spaces.
- Take home, dispose of or secure third-party storage for your belongings. The University does not offer moving assistance or on-site storage.
- If you have an eligible circumstance, such as a late final exam, you can request a late stay. Departure times will depend on the request reason.
Students leaving the residence halls during an active term due to an approved university withdrawal, leave of absence or release from their housing contract must connect with a Residence Life & Housing staff member before departing and follow the proper check-out procedures communicated to them at that time.
Visit Breaks and Special Sessions to learn more about how on-campus housing is managed for academic breaks (Thanksgiving, December and Spring) and what responsibilities students have during those times. Students will also receive an email with instructions closer to those times.
Late Stay
Students with eligible circumstances can request a late stay by completing the Late Stay application in the Breaks and Early/Late Stays section of the My Housing portal. Fees may apply depending on the circumstances.
Eligible circumstances:
Fall or Spring
- Late final exam - Vacate by 10 a.m. the day after residence halls close
- Other special circumstances approved in advance by the Residence Hall or Apartment Coordinator.
Fall Only
- December Break - Students who apply may stay for the entire break. The break fee will be charged to their student account. Partial hall access and prorated fees are not offered.
Spring Only
- Graduating or participating in commencement - Vacate by commencement day at 6 p.m. (no fee; participation will be verified).
Approved for Interim and First Summer Session housing - Move date and time will be communicated to students when scheduled (no late-stay fee; the interim housing fee will apply).
Improper Checkout
Failure to follow proper checkout procedures may result in a $150 improper checkout fee charged to the student account. Examples of an improper check-out include, but are not limited to:
- Leaving without doing anything.
- Leaving later than the posted closing time.
- Leaving without handing your room key/fob to a staff member.
- Having a friend/family member return your room key/fob for you.
Failure to return room key/fob or other access resources upon check-out will incur additional replacement fees. For security purposes, keys/fobs and other resources like spare OneCards will not be accepted late or via mail.
Damage to the room or its contents or failure to leave the room in clean condition may result in additional fees.
Take Your Belongings With You
We do not offer on-site storage for belongings. Students must remove all belongings from their rooms upon checkout and either take them home or secure third-party storage.
Failure to remove all of your belongings or not leave your room clean may result in being billed an excessive housekeeping charge. Belongings left behind after checkout will be discarded. Damage to the room or its contents may also result in being charged additional fees.
Third-Party Summer Storage Options
We are now partnering with Dorm Room Movers who can provide summer storage and shipping services for a fee to interested students. Dorm Room Movers will pick up students' items from their room, store them over the summer at an off-site location and return them in the fall. Not returning to campus next fall? Donate or Discard Unwanted Items
Dumpsters will be placed around campus for spring residence hall move-out for students to discard trash and other items.

Return Your Microfridge Rental
If you rented a microfridge through Campus Specialties Inc. - MyMicroFridge, please unplug, defrost and clean out the unit before checking out. You may leave the unit in your room; it will be picked up after buildings have closed. Failure to clean out your microfridge may result in an excessive housekeeping charge.
