Vocal Studies

The University of Delaware School of Music vocal area provides outstanding instruction from respected faculty members and abundant, high-quality performance opportunities. Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Bachelor of Arts in Music with a vocal emphasis and Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Students are stretched and challenged to reach high levels of excellence in an atmosphere where they can at the same time find support and collegiality with fellow students and faculty mentors. Recent graduates of the vocal area have landed excellent teaching positions and have been accepted into some of the finest graduate programs in the country.

Study in the vocal area is centered on instruction in the private studio. Vocal faculty members are excellent pedagogues who are committed to helping all singers reach their full potential. In addition to private instruction, UD offers students an enticing array of performance opportunities. UD choral ensembles are internationally renowned. The UD Opera Theatre produces fully staged public performances each year and the UD Opera Workshop provides students with opportunities to hone their stagecraft. Vocal study is rounded out by classes in vocal pedagogy, foreign language diction and vocal literature. Regular visits from guest artists give students additional opportunities for growth.

Voice Minors and Honors/Merit Lessons

The Vocal Studies studio is at capacity and there is no availability for the 2025-2026 academic year. There will be no admission for new Applied Music-Voice Minor, Honors, or Merit students. Audition for Voice Minor, Honors or Merit lessons are expected to be resumed for Fall 2026. At that time auditions will be virtual.

Students who wish to keep singing are strongly encouraged to participate in Choral Ensembles. Two of our choirs are open to registration without an audition. Look for open seats in Concert Choir (MUSC462) or Resound Gospel Choir (MUSC465) today!

Our other choirs require an audition. Learn more about the audition process for Chorale, University Singers, Schola Cantorum, and Jazz Singers
