Senior finance and economics major Asaana Shamlin was curious where exactly her double major could lead her when she started touring potential companies through an internship program she joined her sophomore year.

“I had been on many trips already getting to know the companies and what it would be like to work there,” Shamlin says. “Procter & Gamble stood out to me as something different. It was an opportunity to learn about the products we use every day.”

The Wilmington, Delaware native was chosen as a Summer 2020 intern for the Olay Skincare brand at P&G. The internship became remote following the COVID-19 pandemic and Shamlin still had plenty of tasks to complete online.

“I engineered my own projects to where I would create systems and work through the roadblocks,” she says. “I spent a lot of time on Power BI and Excel spreadsheets.”

Shamlin was also able to attend meetings throughout the company, talk with senior leaders and meet up with her fellow interns at least once each week. While the virtual setting presented an obstacle, she says she became more comfortable over time.

“At first, it was challenging to feel included in the normal P&G community,” Shamlin says. “But it got easier and I think I made more meaningful connections this way.”

In fact, Shamlin became so acclimated to the company that she was granted a job upon graduation. “I was offered a full-time analyst position and I accepted,” she says. “I think the company is a great fit and I hope to make a lot of good memories moving to a new place.”

Shamlin says this job is the perfect fit for her major. “I make a lot of financial predictions about data, which is a good mix of my last internship and being able to apply what I learned in the classroom,” she says. “My career goals are right on track because I’m able to move around in the company and travel, as well. It’s what I hoped for in a job.”

She credits the UD Career Center with their services for helping her secure her professional path. “The career fairs and Handshake provide a lot of opportunities for students,” Shamlin says. “That helped me get my foot in the door and gain valuable internship experience.”

Shamlin advises fellow seniors looking to turn their internships into job offers to work hard in your current position and put yourself out there. “Just be a good worker,” she says. “People notice when you go above and beyond what’s necessary and it makes a difference. Be as professional as you can and hold yourself to a higher standard than everyone else.”
