Biological Sciences
Biological Sciences: MS, PhD, Non-Thesis Biology MS, BS/MS 4+1, BA/MS 4+1
About this Program
The Department of Biological Sciences offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees with focus on cell and developmental biology, neurobiology, microbiology, physiology, molecular biology, and genetics. Formalized concentrations provide students with focused research training and individualized career mentorship. All research PhD students receive financial support through assistantships. PhD graduate assistants in Biological Sciences also receive a full tuition scholarship from the University of Delaware and university-subsidized health insurance.
The Department of Biological Sciences also offers a non-thesis Biology MS, along with accelerated Biological Sciences BS/Biology MS 4+1 and Biological Sciences BA/Biology MS 4+1 programs. These programs are designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for careers in biotechnology and related industries or for advanced professional education in the clinical and medical sciences, including medical, dental, and physician assistant programs. The Biology MS and 4+1 programs each offer two concentrations tailored to students pursuing careers in biomedical sciences or in biotechnology and related industries. The Biology MS requires a minimum of 30 credits and is designed to be completed in one year of full-time study. The 4+1 programs provide an accelerated pathway to an MS in Biology, allowing students to complete their combined Bachelor's and Master's studies within five years of full-time enrollment before entering the workforce or pursuing additional professional education. Students may also develop technical competencies for laboratory-based careers in the life sciences through internships and practical academic laboratory experiences relevant to industry, academic, or government settings.
