Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is right around the corner on Monday, January 18, 2021. If you’re planning to celebrate the day of service with a local organization, check out the initiatives at Jersey Cares.
“Jersey Cares is hosting both virtual and in-person events on MLK Day,” says Jersey Cares Senior Manager of Service Events Meagan Mulligan. “From creating virtual COVID Safety Signs to sorting coats across the state through the Jersey Cares Coat Drive, we have opportunities for over 2,100 volunteers ages 4 and up. There’s something for everyone.”
Established in 1993, Jersey Cares is a nonprofit organization that relies on volunteer service and community engagement to support communities across New Jersey. Projects include everything from tutoring children to painting new murals in schools.
“In Jersey Cares’ 26 years of existence, we have provided meals to the hungry and companionship to seniors, kept our neighbors warm by donating coats, revitalized schools across the state and engaged students in hundreds of educational workshops—just to name a few projects,” says Mulligan. “Our impact far outreaches the state of New Jersey and we’re honored to have served and to continue to serve our community.”

For students interested in volunteering on Monday, Mulligan advises visiting the MLK Day page of the Jersey Cares website to see all available positions. Jersey Cares also offers internships throughout the year under their job opportunities tab.
Mulligan urges students to consider the incredible impact of volunteering beyond just MLK Day.
“Volunteering not only benefits the community through the direct service performed, but also brings together individuals with similar goals to help create a better and brighter world,” she says. “When you volunteer, you have the opportunity to connect with individuals from different backgrounds, ages and races. We truly believe that uniting through volunteerism creates the change we wish to see in the world.”
