September is Sexual Health Awareness month. Student Health Services wants to make you aware of all sexual health and reproductive services available to you. Kathryn Morrison, MSN, RN, Nurse Manager at SHS answers all of your frequently asked questions.
Does Student Health offer sexual and reproductive health services?
Student Health can address many of your sexual and reproductive health needs including appointments for STI and HIV testing, contraceptive options, preventive care, routine gynecological care, pregnancy testing, LGBTQ+ healthcare and other sexual and reproductive health concerns.
How can I schedule an appointment?
There are a few ways to schedule an appointment for Sexual and Reproductive Health services. You can call 302-831-2226 x2 to schedule or ask any questions you may have. You can also schedule online through the UD Health Portal. If you have questions, you can message the Sexual and Reproductive Health or LGBTQ+ Health Ally teams through the UD Health Portal.
Why are routine Sexual and Reproductive Health visits important?
Preventive care and routine screenings are a key part of sexual health and your overall wellbeing. We offer health education, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Some STIs can have mild, or no symptoms and routine screening can help ensure early treatment. Preventive care also includes routine health screenings, cancer screenings, prescriptions for PrEP and PEP, and vaccines for HPV, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B that can protect your health now and in the future.
How can I access contraceptives on campus?
You have options available for choosing which contraceptive method is right for you, and almost all options can be accessed on campus. There are free condoms available at various locations on campus including at Student Health in Laurel Hall and Warner Hall. Students can schedule appointments to discuss contraceptive options including birth control pills, Depo Provera, Nexplanon, patches, rings and IUDs. Prescription birth control and emergency contraceptive options are available in the Student Health Dispensary. The Wellbeing Vending Machine in Perkins also has condoms and emergency contraception available.
What if I’m nervous about making an appointment to discuss my sexual and reproductive health?
Our Sexual and Reproductive Health team members are friendly, welcoming and happy to answer all your questions with no shame or judgment. We care about your privacy, and we have a centralized waiting room with no signage in the building indicating that you are there for a Sexual and Reproductive Health appointment. Services are inclusive and welcoming to students of all genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, religious, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We aim to reduce stigma and create a comfortable environment for all students.
