Society of Actuaries recognition and donor support strengthen math sciences program

The University of Delaware’s actuarial sciences program continues to shine, combining academic rigor, professional development and engagement with the field outside the classroom. The result: graduates who are prepared to excel, new donor support, and recognition from an industry association.

Donor-supported initiative covers exam costs

To earn professional credentials, actuarial science students must pass rigorous exams, costing $275 per attempt. Thanks to generous donor support, UD’s exam fee reimbursement program has eased the financial burden, enabling many students to take critical steps to becoming credentialed actuaries.

The following current students and recent graduates successfully completed the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) exams, including Exam P (Probability), Exam FM (Financial Mathematics) and Exam SRM (Statistics for Risk Modeling):

  • Matthew Achenchi (Exams P, FM)

  • Ethan Alcantara (Exam FM)

  • Kevin Cahill (Exam P)

  • Max DiRaddo (Exam FM)

  • Dakota Donaghue (Exams P, FM)

  • Carter Manzvanzvike (Exam FM)

  • Kerri Olivers (Exam FM)

  • Brandon Peirce (Exam P)

  • Madeline VanBuren (Exam P)

  • Zachary Villamor (Exams P, FM and SRM)

Their accomplishments reflect the dedication and hard work that define our actuarial science community.

SOA awards UCAP-AC status to UD program

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) awarded UD’s program the prestigious Universities and Colleges with Actuarial Programs–Advanced Curriculum (UCAP-AC) designation. This recognition highlights the strength of UD’s curriculum, its breadth of approved coursework and its commitment to preparing students for preliminary professional exams.

Actuarial Science Club

Beyond the classroom, the Actuarial Science Club has become a central part of student life and professional growth. This registered student organization helps members build peer networks, prepare for professional exams and connect with industry leaders through guest speaker events.

The club credits much of its progress to former adviser David Edwards, a professor of mathematical sciences who retired from UD in 2025 after nearly 30 years of service. His leadership and dedicated mentorship left a lasting impact on both the club and the broader actuarial sciences program. Read his remembrance about his time as a Blue Hen.

Celebrating student achievements

Reflecting the caliber of the program, actuarial sciences students and alumni continue to secure competitive internships and full-time positions across the industry:

  • Senior Madeline VanBuren spent the summer as an intern with Gallagher.

  • Zachary Villamor (Class of 2026) joined MetLife in a full-time role.

  • Elliana Smith (Class of 2026) accepted a full-time position with Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies.
