New academic programs and joint degree options offer flexible, interdisciplinary routes into business and data science

New mathematical science programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels are giving University of Delaware students opportunities to not only learn the skills necessary to pursue new careers, but to thrive in them. 

Actuarial Sciences Minor

A new minor in actuarial sciences opens a clear pathway for students pursuing careers in risk management and quantitative analysis. The program combines required coursework in actuarial mathematics, calculus, data science, probability theory and statistics with electives across economics, finance, mathematics and statistics.

Complementing the department’s popular bachelor of science in actuarial sciences, the minor serves students majoring in fields such as economics, finance and statistics who want to enter the actuarial profession.

New 4+1 MBA for Math Majors

The department collaborates with departments across the College of Arts & Sciences and College of Engineering to offer interdisciplinary 4+1 programs for mathematical sciences majors. In a new partnership with the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, math majors can earn a master of business administration (MBA) with just one extra year of study, expanding access to corporate careers.

Math Programs Remain a Popular Choice

The department’s interdisciplinary offerings continue to see strong demand across campus:

• Mathematics and Data Science B.S.: Established in 2023, the major has already graduated its first cohort, sending alumni directly into the workforce as data scientists.

• Mathematics and Data Science Minor: Designed for non-department majors, the program has grown rapidly, reaching nearly 40 enrolled students.

• Mathematics Minor: The long-standing minor remains a popular choice across campus disciplines, currently enrolling 270 students.
