Student achievement, curriculum innovation and research momentum define a banner year

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware celebrates a year of academic distinction and growth in 2025–26.

Biology Research Day

On Jan. 30, 140 students and faculty gathered for the fourth annual Biology Research Day. The event showcased outstanding biological sciences research by undergraduate and graduate students with 62 poster presentations, 12 oral presentations and 20 flash talks. Thirteen students received cash awards recognizing outstanding work. More than 40 undergraduates are engaged in research across departmental labs.

Curriculum Expansion

Faculty introduced 10 new undergraduate courses and two new non-thesis master’s tracks, which may be completed independently or within a 4+1 bachelor’s/master’s pathway. New offerings span endocrinology, bacterial pathogens, host–pathogen interactions, biology of aging, molecular therapeutics and more, alongside a new laboratory course and three experience-based classes focused on research and career development.

Led by Associate Professor Donna Woulfe, the master’s program expansion strengthens professional preparation. Associate Professors Jen Nauen and Chris Trimby also launched new study abroad programs offering medical shadowing and science history experiences.

Honoring a Legacy of Teaching

On Oct. 15, the department welcomed Stephanie Gardner of Purdue University as the Robert C. Hodson Memorial Lecturer. The annual lecture honors Hodson’s legacy as a devoted educator who championed innovation in science teaching.

Recognizing Spring 2025 Graduates

In spring 2025, 172 undergraduates earned their degrees, with several recognized for exceptional achievement. Medha Annam, Jessica Benito, Owen Donnelly, Sarah Garner and Dilpreet Rayat received Academic Excellence Awards for graduating with a 4.0 GPA. Gabriel DaSilva (Tavares Lab) and Donna Price (Sutherland Lab) earned Undergraduate Research Awards. The Paynter Memorial Award honored Annam, Donnelly and Garner for achieving the highest academic index and demonstrating outstanding personal qualities as they prepare for medical school.
