Research Interests

Sam Waters joined the University of Delaware in 2025 as an assistant professor with the Mathematical Sciences Learning Laboratory (MSLL) team.

Waters earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Chicago in 2014 and a doctorate in educational mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado in 2025. Between degrees, he worked in student affairs at Michigan State University and Swarthmore College, focusing on residence life and student activities. He brings his student affairs experiences and mathematics education background to his role teaching introductory courses.

Waters' research focuses on undergraduate mathematics education in introductory and lower-level courses. His interests include improving introductory classes, supporting students in transitioning to higher education and building effective learning skills. He also researches statistics education; his dissertation examined how introductory statistics courses prepare students to analyze news media.
