Jacob Mayle

Biography

Jacob Mayle earned his A.B. in mathematics from Colgate University and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) in 2022 under the direction of Nathan Jones. Before joining the University of Delaware as an assistant professor in fall 2025, he served as a teacher-scholar postdoctoral fellow at Wake Forest University.

Mayle is passionate about teaching mathematics, including fostering curiosity, growth and confidence in his students. Since arriving at UD, he has taught MATH 210 (Discrete Mathematics I), MATH 243 (Analytic Geometry and Calculus C), and MATH 367 (Seminar). He has mentored undergraduate projects in computational number theory and cryptography. His teaching has been recognized with UIC's Graduate Teaching Award and he is a Mathematical Association of American (MAA) Project NExT Fellow.

His research is in arithmetic geometry and number theory more broadly, with particular interests in elliptic curves, Galois representations, and local-global phenomena. Much of his work explores how Galois representations can be used to better understand the arithmetic of elliptic curves and higher dimensional abelian varieties. He is especially interested in how computational methods can illuminate research problems and open new directions of inquiry.
