Jacob Calvert

Biography

Jacob Calvert is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware. His research is motivated by questions at the frontiers of physics, the life sciences and engineering. Drawing on an interdisciplinary background, he translates conceptual challenges in these fields into mathematical problems, with a particular focus on probability theory and rigorous statistical mechanics. His work also explores applications of probability to physics and data science.

Before joining UD, Calvert held postdoctoral fellowships at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Santa Fe Institute and Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath). He also brings nine years of professional experience as a data scientist, experience that informs his approach to teaching data science.

Calvert earned his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Marshall Scholar at the University of Oxford and University of Bristol and studied bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Outside of his academic work, Calvert enjoys film, fiction, tennis and playing electric guitar.
