New interdisciplinary AI and Society certificate offers hands-on experimentation and chance to examine limits and ethics

This fall, the University of Delaware launched a brand-new AI and Society Certificate—and you don't need a single line of coding experience to join. Housed in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (DLLC), this nine-credit interdisciplinary program is open to every major on campus. Whether you are studying art, business or biology, this certificate is built to help you navigate how AI is rewriting the rules of our academic, professional and daily lives.

The certificate program breaks down into three easy steps:

  • AI Fundamentals: Step one is your crash course in the AI universe. You will get hands-on experience experimenting with generative AI tools while tackling the big questions: How do these systems actually work? What are the real-world impacts of algorithmic bias, misinformation, intellectual property theft and the massive environmental footprint of AI tech?

  • AI in Context: Next, you choose a course that looks at AI through a unique lens, choosing from subjects like philosophy, communication, economics, music, political science or cognitive science.

  • AI in Discipline: Last, you will bring it all home by exploring how AI specifically applies to your chosen field.

Spotlight on the AI for the Humanities Internship

Want to turn your coursework into a resume-boosting powerhouse? One of the most exciting tracks for your final course is the Internship in AI for the Humanities.

Instead of just reading about tech, interns dive deep into specific AI tools to test their limits, question their ethics and figure out how they can be used responsibly in human-centered fields. But you won't just keep that knowledge to yourself.

A massive part of the internship is mastering public communication and digital media production. Students research, script, record and edit high-quality videos for the official AI for the Humanities YouTube channel. By creating video guides that teach others how to use (and question) these tools, you will walk away with a ready-to-show portfolio featuring real skills in tech research, public speaking and video production.

The AI and Society Certificate weaves together expertise from departments all across UD, giving you the perfect blend of practical, hands-on experience and critical thinking. It is your chance to future-proof your degree and shape how technology impacts your world.
