Each year, the Department of Political Science and International Relations presents the Paul Dolan Undergraduate Fellowship Award at its awards ceremony and ice cream social. The award provides a senior-year tuition scholarship of up to $13,500 to a student who demonstrates academic excellence and a strong interest in public law.

In 2026, the department presented the Dolan Award to Alexa Webber, an honors political science major with minors in legal studies and philosophy.

After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Delaware, Webber plans to attend law school in the Northeast and pursue a career using the law to serve the public. She reflected on the experiences that shaped her goals and what receiving the award means to her.

What led you to become interested in public law?

“I became interested in public law through my experiences as a student at UD and with my family.

“During my time at UD, I have participated in several public service-focused experiences. I worked as a poll worker for a Newark election through an independent study course, served as a peer writing tutor and conducted research for my senior thesis on whether restrictive election laws affect voter turnout. I also interned for two summers in the Government and Community Relations Department at NJ Transit, a state agency that provides public transportation throughout New Jersey.

“Through these experiences, I discovered how much I enjoy using my education and interests to help improve the lives of others.

“This past winter, my mother and I also went through the legal process of filing for joint guardianship of my brother, who has autism. Seeing the compassion and understanding demonstrated by the attorneys involved solidified my desire to make complex and potentially emotional legal processes easier for others.”

What areas of public law interest you?

“I am interested in a wide range of public law. I could see myself working as an advocate or estate attorney, helping families navigate complicated situations like mine. I could also see myself working as a lawyer for an organization such as NJ Transit. Both paths would allow me to contribute to the public good.”

What did receiving the Dolan Award mean to you?

“It was an honor to be selected for the Dolan Award. I am grateful that the committee recognized my hard work as an undergraduate student.

“I have been dedicated to pursuing the opportunities offered by the political science department and making the most of my experience at UD. Receiving this award made me feel that dedication had paid off.

“It is also encouraging to know the awards committee recognizes my potential for a career serving the public. The award has strengthened my confidence in my abilities as a student and future lawyer.”

As Webber enters her senior year and prepares for law school, the Dolan Award will support her continued academic development and commitment to public service.
