The Center for Global & Area Studies (CGAS) at the University of Delaware is proud to celebrate Rachel Herway, recipient of the 2026 Alejandro Reyes Scholarship Award from the Pan American Association of Philadelphia.

Herway is a rising senior honors global studies major with a concentration in world cultures, and minors in music and Latin American and Iberian studies. She plans to pursue ethnomusicology, and as a 2026 Summer Scholar will research the shape note system of musical notation in the Philadelphia area.

The association is dedicated to promoting cultural, education and economic activities that increase understanding and cooperation among the peoples of the Americas. The Alejandro Reyes Scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to international understanding—values that Herway exemplifies through her studies and engagement with global issues.

Her award continues a remarkable tradition of student achievement at CGAS. She is the third CGAS student in the past three years to receive a scholarship award from the Pan American Association, following Amber Tiongson and Shanea Higgin. This distinction reflects the exceptional talent, global engagement, leadership and commitment to service that characterize CGAS students.

Herway was honored at the 2026 Pan American Day Celebration & Scholarship Luncheon on May 5. During the event the association awarded nearly $20,000 in college scholarships and recognitions to area students majoring in Latin American and related studies.

Attendees also had the opportunity to meet H. E. Ángeles Moreno Bau, the ambassador of Spain, underscoring the importance of international collaboration, cultural exchange and global education in fostering greater understanding among nations and cultures.

CGAS congratulates Herway on her well-deserved achievement and her dedication to building bridges across cultures and advancing international understanding.
