April 16, 2026 Written by Department of Philosophy
According to University of Delaware alumna Catherine Emmett (AS01), her philosophy degree equipped her with the skills she needed to navigate the rest of her career. Emmett is a lawyer with a B.A. in philosophy from UD, an M.A. in philosophy from University College Cork in Ireland and a J.D. from Widener University. She now works for the Bureau of Land Management, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
"I’m forever grateful to the UD Philosophy Department for preparing me with the critical thinking skills necessary to find my way to a career and work through the varied challenges my work brings every day. Today, I’m a senior legislative affairs specialist at the Department of the Interior – a job I never even knew existed when I graduated from UD," said Emmett.
"In Legislative Affairs, we prepare witnesses to testify before Congress and respond to any number and type of congressional requests. Everyday is filled with unexpected challenges given the breadth of the work of the Department. Philosophy was the perfect degree to prepare me to think through all kinds of issues from energy development to conservation from varying perspectives."
