Suzanne Burton to continue supporting statewide arts advocacy, policy and creative programming

Suzanne L. Burton, professor of music education in the University of Delaware School of Music, has been reappointed by Governor Matthew Meyer to serve a three-year term on the Delaware State Arts Council. Burton has been a member of the council since 2021, when former Governor John Carney first appointed her to the position.

The Delaware State Arts Council serves as the advisory body to the Delaware Division of the Arts (DDOA), a state agency with the mission of “supporting the arts and cultivating creativity to enhance the quality of life in Delaware.”

The Council helps shape statewide arts policy, reviews programs and services, and provides guidance on initiatives such as the Creative Aging program, Poetry Out Loud competition and professional development for artists and educators.

UD faculty and arts organizations have received significant support from the DDOA’s grant programs, including funding for the Resident Ensemble Players, the Master Players and the Community Music School’s summer programs. In addition, several faculty members in Art & Design and the School of Music have earned individual artist grants and prestigious artist fellowships.

“This is a time in history where, across the nation, the arts face challenges and uncertainty,” Burton said. “I am proud to be on the Delaware State Arts Council to support and advocate for the arts for all in Delaware. Here, the arts drive creativity and innovation, and we are agents of change.”
