Dan Smith named senior associate dean

Dan Smith, associate dean for the social sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been appointed senior associate dean by Interim Dean Debra Hess Norris, effective Oct. 1, 2024.

Smith will also serve as the senior advisor to the dean on the budget, working closely with other associate deans to maintain the College’s financial health.

“Dan is organized and engaged, with a clear understanding of our financial and budgetary models, challenges, and opportunities,” Norris said. “He is interested in building greater connections and collaborations across campus and beyond. He is an advocate for the University more broadly and deeply committed to ensuring that all our students, staff, and faculty feel valued and welcome.”

“I am honored by this appointment,” Smith said. “Working in the College of Arts and Sciences has been a transformative and fulfilling experience for me, and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with my dean’s office colleagues, department chairs, faculty, and staff. CAS is a special community.”

Prior to this appointment, Smith served as associate dean of the social sciences for four years. He is a professor in the Joseph R. Biden Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration, where he was the associate director and director of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. He also has served as president of the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Senate and as a member of the University Faculty Senate Budget Committee.
