November 04, 2024 Written by Zoe Pawliczek

The University of Delaware Department of Philosophy hosted a debate on Friday, October 18, when Robert Post from Yale University and Nishiten Shah from Amherst College, two internationally renowned scholars, discussed the question, "What is the Relationship Between Free Speech and Academic Freedom?"

The debate took place in front of a live audience in Gore Recital Hall. Department chair Joel Pust introduced and moderated the discussion, which was followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Post is the Sterling Professor of Law at Yale Law School. He specializes in constitutional law, with a particular emphasis on the First Amendment. Shah is a professor of Philosophy at Amherst College. He works in ethics, epistemology and philosophy of mind.

This debate was the seventh in a series hosted by the Department of Philosophy and the Class of 1955 Ethics Endowment Fund. The goal is to showcase serious and intellectually substantive and respectful debates about important ethical and political topics.
