Learn English at the University of Delaware English Language Institute and advance your career!

The University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) has been serving English language learners through high-quality, innovative approaches to teaching language and academic skills since 1979. Regarded as one of the most respected intensive English programs in the U.S., we provide instruction in English, acculturation, and academic success to students seeking university degree study, career enrichment, or general English language improvement.

Though most of our students travel from around the world to train at the ELI, we are proud to offer English language instruction to adults in our local community through the Evening Program. The Evening Program is a great fit for local professionals who would like to improve their English while balancing a busy schedule. Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing courses are taught twice a week during the evenings and are kept small (10-15 students), so that each individual receives sufficient support.

Why should I learn English?

Delaware has a flourishing Spanish-speaking community, so many people might not feel the need to learn English beyond a certain level; however, English language acquisition is an excellent tool to help students advance in their careers or become civically engaged.

“There are professionals working in the U.S. who are overqualified for the position that they're in. They may have an advanced degree from their country, and now they're working an entry-level position because they don't have the language and the in-country credentials to do the job that they're really skilled at,” said Robbie Bushong, the assistant director of the Evening Program.

“This program is a way for them to improve their language, but also potentially position themselves to have a job in their line of work, or to advance in their current position.”

Can I join the Evening Program without any English proficiency?

We welcome students of all English levels, including absolute beginners. At the start of the program, students will take a language exam and will be placed into one of three levels: beginner, proficient, and advanced. Our course levels are aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and take students up to the B2 level.

We find that full language immersion in the classroom is very effective–even for students with no prior English proficiency. “When students need language to do something, they will rise to that requirement,” stated Bushong.

“When they don't need the language to do something, then there's not as much motivation.”

What happens after I finish the program?

Students will receive a Certificate of Completion after they successfully pass each course level and final exam. The certificate will indicate the student’s CEFR level, which is a widely accepted framework used by employers to determine a candidate’s language capabilities. We encourage students to include their Certificate of Completion with their materials when applying for jobs or pursuing other professional endeavors. Note: A certificate does not guarantee admittance to the University of Delaware.

What are our students saying?

“My English has continually improved since I started taking courses at the ELI,” stated Diana Garcia, a former Evening Program student who is currently pursuing a post-doctorate in Applied Chemistry at the University of Delaware.

“Since arriving in Delaware, it was truly the best decision I made for my English, which is always a point of concern for Spanish-speakers. That’s why, each time I finished a course, I enrolled in the next one.”
