Borrowing Policy for Loaner Laptops

Thank you for your interest in the Ask It Service Desk loaner laptop program. This is a grant funded needs-based program in collaboration with the Dean of Students office.

Eligibility

To qualify a student must:

  • Be a matriculated University of Delaware Student
  • Be enrolled full-time during the semester in which the laptop is requested
  • Be in good standing with the Loaner Laptop Program
  • Use the laptop only for classwork

Loaner laptops are provided for two weeks, to keep the laptop for longer all long-term loans must be approved by the Dean of Students office. Do not reach out directly to the DOS office, all communication must be through the loaner ticket. Loaner laptops are not a replacement for personally owned devices and are not guaranteed.

Acceptable Use

Loaner laptops may be used only for classwork Borrowers may not:

  • Use the laptop for employment, paid research, or other paid activities
  • Use the laptop for any illegal activity
  • Alter or replace the operating system
  • Tamper with, modify, or attempt to repair the laptop

Extensions and Returns

Borrowers are individually responsible for keeping track of due dates and for returning in person at the Ask IT service desk by the date due.

  • To request an extension, the borrower must reply to the existing loaner ticket via email prior to the due date
  • Extensions are considered on an individual basis
  • Loaners can be returned to the Ask IT service desk anytime we’re open.
  • Original Laptop, bag, and charger must be returned
  • The borrowed must personally return the laptop

Overdue Loans

If a laptop is not returned to the Ask IT service desk within 3 days of the due date a $5 fee will apply for each day late. A maximum late penalty of $105 will be applied. After 21 days the laptop will be considered lost/stolen and the students account will be charged for the full cost of replacing the laptop. Laptop replacements costs $1200-$2000 depending on the model. If the laptop is returned undamaged within 30 days of the replacement fee being posted that charge can be removed if the student requests so in writing.

Damaged Laptops:

Users will be billed for damages to equipment, unless such damages are deemed normal ‘wear and tear’ by staff. If damaged equipment cannot be repaired, the user will be billed the cost of replacement.
