Tutoring Positions

Student tutors positions are available for undergraduates who have received a good grade in their respective course.  Both the iBC program and SCEN101 use student tutors.  As a tutor, you will work in the ISLL tutoring center during your scheduled hours to help students with coursework, homework, and lab work.  The tutoring center has hours into the evening and on weekends.  Student tutors are paid an hourly wage.

Studio Fellows

Studio Fellows are paid undergraduate workers that engage with students during interactive, group work, Studio sessions (iBC) and labs (SCEN101). Along with Preceptors and Graduate Teaching Assistants, they guide students during problem-solving, guided inquiry, and experimentation. Studio Fellows are from a range of majors, who have taken the course in which they are now working as a student leader. For those working with the integrated Biology and General Chemistry (iBC) courses these are students from Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Laboratory Science, and Marine Biology to name a few. Those students working with the Interdisciplinary Physical Science (SCEN101) course are non-science majors, primarily pre-service elementary education majors, but also include other majors such as Psychology, Finance, English, and Fine Arts. These student leaders can be athletes, ROTC, honors, and can be from all years.

Studio Fellows are selected based on a variety of aspects. In addition to having experience as a previous student in the course, good grades combined with a relatable personality are key. Students that become Studio Fellows have the opportunity to work with a collaborative teaching team consisting of professors, preceptors, and graduate students, thereby learning valuable leadership skills.

Chemistry Workshop Leaders

What does the position entail?

Integrated workshop leaders are responsible for leading TWO sections of approximately 12 students through an activity with general chemistry practice problems (each is ~60 minutes) and attending one weekly training session. A thorough knowledge of general chemistry is essential for a successful leader who must assist other general chemistry students as they strive to learn general chemistry. We believe that how you interact with the students and guide them (not just answer their questions) is just as important - if not more so - than your content knowledge.

What is the schedule for a workshop leader?

The weekly CHEM103 workshops are primarily scheduled for Mondays, with workshops scheduled on other days as needed to accommodate student schedules. We offer both online and in-person workshops. Workshop leaders are required to attend a weekly training meeting throughout the semester, as well as an orientation meeting on the Monday before the start of Fall classes.

What do you get out of it?

Gratitude from your students and iBC faculty. That rush when you see your students "get it" on their own. The opportunity to stay fresh with the basics of chemistry. Workshop leaders are paid a small monetary leadership award, and the option to earn Discovery Learning Experience (DLE) credit for your role as a workshop leader. Workshop leaders who elect to earn DLE credit will be required to complete a reflective essay and participate in a peer observation program.
