The University of Delaware has developed a university-wide policy that will enable students to move more freely among majors and colleges. This will also provide students with the flexibility to pursue multiple majors and minors, to work at the interfaces between established disciplines, and to experience a broader selection of electives. UD is committed to ensuring that all students are making informed decisions regarding their academic interests and their professional goals and objectives. Prior to requesting a transfer/change of major, please consult with your academic advisor. To submit a request to change major or minors, please complete the form found here.
Certain majors are limited by accreditation or other academic requirements (minimum GPA, pre-requisites, etc.), availability of resources, physical space limitations (such as lack of laboratory space), or already have full capacity (e.g. training at Vita Nova). Those majors are listed below:
Agriculture and Natural Resources:
- Animal & Food Sciences – Internal transfers must have a 2.5 GPA.
- Engineering Technology - Students must have completed 24+ credits; one course in calculus is required prior to admission. For applicants with fewer than 24 credits, there must be evidence of success in at least pre-calculus.
- Landscape Horticulture & Design (Landscape Design concentration) - Internal transfers will be considered for admission upon successful completion of 45 credit hours, a 2.5 GPA, and submission of an acceptable portfolio of their work. The following courses must be completed before the portfolio review course (PLSC 203): PLSC 103, PLSC 202, PLSC 232, and one approved ART course.
- Pre-Veterinary Medicine & Animal Biosciences - Internal transfers must have a 2.5 GPA.
- Wildlife Conservation – Internal transfers must have a 2.25 GPA.
Arts and Sciences: Art, Music, and Communication
- Admission/transfers into the Departments of Music and Art are based on audition and portfolio review.
- Communication accepts students into Communication interest and then selects the top 100 sophomore to junior students based on performance in the lower level communication courses.
Business & Economics: The Lerner College has a fact sheet which is provided to students interested in transferring into the college. Information about changing into majors available in the Lerner College is available online in .pdf format. All majors are restricted:
- Accounting and MIS: Students must have taken MATH 221 and ECON 151/152 courses with a grade of C- or better, and have 28 credit hours completed before they are admitted. ACCT: Minimum GPA of 2.7 also required. MIS applicants are encouraged to take MISY 160.
- Economics: ECON-BA and Economics Education require ECON 151/152 with C- grade. ECON-BS requires MATH 221 and ECON 151/152 courses with a grade of C- or better, and have 28 credit hours completed before they are admitted.
- Finance: Students must have taken MATH 221 and ECON 151/152 courses with a grade of C- or better, and have 28 credit hours completed before they are admitted. Minimum GPA of 2.7 also required.
- HRIM: Student must have completed 15 credit hours and have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA for 15-60 credit hours.
- International Business Studies: Students must have completed ECON 151/152 and MATH 221 with a grade of C- or better, be enrolled in a foreign language course at the time of application, and have 28 credit hours completed. Minimum 2.8 is also required for this major, in order to qualify for the study abroad semester.
- Marketing, Management, Operations Management: Students must have completed ECON 151/152 and MATH 221 with a grade of C- or better, and have 28 credit hours completed before they are admitted. Minimum GPA of 2.7 also required.
Engineering: No restricted majors
Health Sciences:
- Athletic Training: Students interested in the major should apply for admission to the Athletic Training Interest program. Pre-requisite courses for AT are HESC155, HESC220, HESC210 and HESC240. Directed observation hours, clinical evaluations and competencies, essay, and recommendations are required.
- Health Studies: Requires interview with program manager.
- Health Studies/Occupational Therapy option: Admission is limited due to joint admission decisions by UD and Thomas Jefferson University.
- Health and Physical Education: Completion of HESC140, 141, 145,155, 220 and 230, NTDT200, ENGL110, and a math course. An overall GPA of 2.5 and a 2.75 GPA in the major are required. Completion of portfolio and passing scores on the PRAXIS I. Students may apply to the Health and Physical Education Interest program at any time.
- Medical Technology: Completion of BISC207, 208, 276, 300, CHEM103, 104, 213, 214, and 216. Completion of 60 credits and a 2.0 GPA are required. Students interested in the major can apply at any time for admission to Medical Technology Interest.
- Nursing: Completion of BISC207 and CHEM103 or CHEM105. 3.0 GPA required. Admission also is dependent on space available.
- Sports Management: GPA of 2.7 and completion of HESC202 and ENGL110. Students are evaluated on GPA, pre-requisite courses and community/volunteer experiences.
Human Services, Education and Public Policy:
- Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising
- Early Childhood Education: students with 0-32 earned credits must have a minimum of 2.25 GPA, students with 33-60 credits must have a minimum of 2.4 GPA; students with 61 or more credits must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA.
- Elementary Teacher Education: Minimum 2.6 GPA (this is necessary so that teachers can be certified in neighboring states).
Marine and Earth Studies: No restricted majors
Dates to request transfers into the above majors: There will be a two week transfer application period for restricted majors followed by a one-week decision period. This will allow the process to be competitive in “restricted” majors.
For Fall of 2009, students submit Change of Major requests from September 1, 2009 through September 15, 2009. Departments will notify students of their decisions by September 22.
For Spring of 2010, students submit students submit Change of Major requests from February 8, 2010 through February 22, 2010. Departments will notify students by March 1.
Non-restricted majors may require year-round admissions. Students must be in good academic standing (i.e., GPA should not be less than 2.0). |
