Are you a Spanish Heritage Speaker? Take our survey!

If you grew up speaking or hearing Spanish at home or in your community, our Spanish Heritage Language classes are designed for you! These courses fulfill graduation requirements while helping you develop your Spanish skills in a way that values your unique linguistic background. We recognize, validate and study the Spanish language as it is used in the U.S. context and give students an opportunity to build upon their existing linguistic and cultural knowledge and experiences.

Our classes are small, interactive, and community-oriented, with creative service learning projects and real-world applications to support your personal, professional growth and are great for meeting new friends at UD. Available Courses

This course is designed for heritage learners—students who grew up with Spanish in their community and wish to further develop their communication skills in the language. Through an in-depth exploration of linguistic identity, stylistic variation, and the history of Spanish, students will enhance their reading and writing abilities while reflecting on how they define themselves through language. With a focus on intuitive grammar and sociolinguistics, the course also delves into how cultural resistance is expressed through music and how student voices serve as powerful counter-narratives. Students will not only learn about the Spanish language but also about their role in shaping their linguistic and cultural identity.

Note: Cannot be combined with SPAN 105, SPAN 106, SPAN 107, SPAN 200, and SPAN 205.

Through reading and discussion of comics, popular traditions, articles, documentaries, and film we will explore diverse Latinx peoples’ cultural identities and significance in the US. Immigration, neocolonialism, discrimination, feminism, homosexuality, and exile are some of the topics covered, along with points of convergence between Latino/a/x resistance and that of other colonized peoples around the world.
