Hal White, professor of chemistry and biochemistry and director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Undergraduate Science Education Program at UD, and graduate students Brad Bauer and Joseph DePalma were featured in a November 2009 HHMI Bulletin article about training programs for teaching assistants (TAs). The article looked at UD's HHMI-funded “Introduction to Laboratory Instruction” class. In addition, the UD program was featured in an audio-visual slideshow that accompanied the article.

Paul Kane, a UD alumnus who covers national politics for the Washington Post, gave his alma mater a mention in a Nov. 5 online political chat for the newspaper, responding to a comment about Blue Hen David Plouffe, who helped manage the 2008 campaign of President Barack Obama: “Any shout-out for Plouffe is going to get my attention. For what it's worth, Chris Christie's win was another big victory for the University of Delaware's poli sci department, now the most important poli sci program in America. Its veterans include: Biden, Plouffe, Steve Schmidt (McCain's campaign chief), Christie, Kane. Go Fightin' Blue Hens!”

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Nov. 4 Baltimore Business Journal article about Black and Decker CEO Nolan D. Archibald. Elson was quoted in a Nov. 3 Reuters article about pay to employees at banks that received government bailout funds, and a Sydney (Australia) Morning-Herald article about executive pay levels. Elson also was quoted in a Nov. 2 Washington Post article about executive compensation, and a Nov. 2 Bloomberg article about executive Hector Ruiz and fallout from insider trading charges.

Ben Yagoda, professor of English, was featured in a Nov. 4 Reuters article about the memoirs of politicians and celebrities, and in a Nov. 3 Philadelphia Inquirer article about the modern emphasis on memoirs. "There has never been a time like this. The sheer volume of memoirs is unprecedented,” Yagoda told the Inquirer.

Jamie Holder, assistant professor of physics and astronomy and deputy spokesperson for the VERITAS collaboration, was quoted in a Nov. 4 Symmetry magazine article about VERITAS and the discovery of very-high-energy gamma rays in the Cigar Galaxy (M82), a bright galaxy filled with exploding stars 12 million light years from Earth.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell was featured in a Nov. 4 News Journal article after delivering a UD Speaks lecture at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Harsh Bais, assistant professor of plant and soil sciences, was featured in a Nov. 3 Los Angeles Times blog about his research on how plants recognize siblings.

Christopher J. Christie, a UD alumnus, was featured in a Nov. 3 Associated Press article after winning the New Jersey gubernatorial race.

Irene Davis, professor of physical therapy, was featured in a Nov. 3 News Journal article about fitness, commenting on the benefits of barefoot running.

Muqtedar Khan, associate professor of political science and international relations, wrote an opinion piece in the Nov. 3 News Journal about religion and moral authority.

Ilka Riddle, project leader at the Center for Disabilities Studies, and Paul Silverman of the Delaware Division of Public Health were featured Nov. 3 on radio station WILM's NewsTalk AM program about H1N1 and seasonal flu. Riddle discussed people with disabilities and chronic health issues who are at greater risk of contracting the flu.

Joel Best, professor of sociology, was cited in articles in the Nov. 2 Pocono Record and the Oct. 30 Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel and Austin (Texas) Statesman-American about paranoia concerning Halloween tricks.

Douglas Tallamy, chairperson of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, was quoted in a Nov. 2 Indianapolis Star article about a presentation on native plants. "We need to create functioning ecosystems in our yards. We've got to make it happen where we're living. Native plants are the key to doing that," Tallamy said.

The University Museums “Sound, Print, Record” exhibition was cited in a Nov. 1 Philadelphia Inquirer article.

William Latham, associate professor of economics, wrote an opinion piece in the Nov. 1 News Journal concerning the state economy. The piece appeared in advance of the Nov. 9-10 conference, “Creating New Economies for Delaware, the Region and the Nation,” which will be held at UD's Clayton Hall.

UD was included in an Oct. 31 Philadelphia Inquirer article about ghost stories on college campuses in the region, citing a worker named Elmo whose ghost is purported to haunt Mitchell Hall.
