3:44 p.m., Feb. 7, 2011----The University of Delaware Department of Women's Studies will sponsor a spring semester series, “Research on Race, Ethnicity and Culture,” with lectures beginning Feb. 16 and continuing through May 4.

The series, part of a department course, will meet each Wednesday from 12:20 to 1:10 p.m. in Room 116 Gore Hall.

The lectures are open to the public and are scheduled as follows:

Feb. 16 -- “Serviam Girls' Academy: One Model for Educating Low-Income, Urban Girls,” Jeanne Rapley, executive director, Serviam Girls Academy.

Feb. 23 -- “When Precious Meets Big Mike: Gender and Race in 'Precious' and 'The Blind Side,'” Gerald Turkel, professor, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, and Kathleen Turkel, assistant professor, Department of Women's Studies.

March 2 -- “Encountering Others and Ourselves: An Ethnographic Video Project with Delaware's Guatemalan Immigrants,” April Veness, associate professor, Department of Geography, and Connie Saltzman, departments of Psychology and Spanish Studies.

March 9 -- “Struggle for Awareness: Tanzanian Women and Their Current Education and Advocacy Efforts for Human Rights,” Emily Jonas, departments of Women's Studies and Anthropology.

March 16 -- “Romanian Peasant Women: The Impact of Naziism, Communism, Socialism and European Union Accession,” Ken Adams, departments of Political Science and International Relations and Women's Studies.

March 23 -- “Left for Dead: Race, Gender and Community in HIV/AIDS Prison Wards,” Ben Fleury-Steiner, associate professor, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.

April 6 -- “Ne Me Quitte Pas ('Don't Leave Me'): The Passion of Nina Simone,” Mary Ruth Warner, supplemental faculty, Department of Women's Studies.

April 13 -- “Works By African American Women Composers,” Marie Robinson, associate professor, Department of Music.

April 20 -- “Art and Transformation,” Arla Patch, independent artist, writer and teacher.

April 27 -- “Doing Diversity: Negotiating Difference in the University,” Stephanie Kerschbaum, assistant professor, Department of English.

May 4 -- “Women, Dress and The Holocaust,” Margaret Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor, Department of Women's Studies.

“Research on Race, Ethnicity and Culture” may be taken as a one-credit, pass/fail course (BAMS/WOMS 298-010) and may be repeated for credit.

For enrolled students, an orientation session will be held Feb. 9 and the final examination will be held May 11. There will be no session March 30 due to spring break.
