3:44 p.m., Oct. 6, 2009----“Creating New Economies for Delaware, the Region and the Nation” will be the subject of a two-day conference, scheduled Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 9-10, in Clayton Hall on the University of Delaware's Newark campus. Registration for this conference is now being accepted.

Part of the University's continuing Creating Knowledge-Based Partnerships Conference series, the program focuses on regional efforts to strengthen and advance Delaware's economic growth.

Keynote speakers on Nov. 9 will include U.S. Sen. Thomas R. Carper; Jared Bernstein, chief economist to Vice President Joseph R. Biden; Liz Ann Sonders, senior vice president and chief investment strategist, Charles Schwab & Co. Inc.; and Delaware Gov. Jack Markell.

In addition, panel discussions are scheduled Nov. 9 on

-- “Reframing the U.S. Economy,” with Arkadi Kuhlman, chairman, president and CEO of ING Direct; Ellen Kullman, CEO of DuPont; and William Poole, Distinguished Scholar in Residence at UD and former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis;

-- “Regional Opportunities and Global Perspectives,” with Tevfik Aksoy, chief economist for the Middle East, Turkey and North Africa for Morgan Stanley; Ian McLean, executive vice president of finance and markets at Exelon Corp; and Stoyan Tenev, lead economist for the East Asia and Pacific Region of the World Bank Group's International Finance Corp; and

-- “New Economies for Delaware,” with Christopher Coons, county executive for New Castle County; Donald Puglisi, principal of Puglisi & Associates and MBNA America Professor Emeritus of Business at UD; Robert Harra, president and chief operating officer at Wilmington Trust Corp.; and Tom Morr, president of Select Greater Philadelphia.

Also speaking at the conference on Nov. 9 will be UD President Patrick T. Harker; Dan Rich, University Professor of Public Policy; John Taylor, executive director of the Delaware Public Policy Institute; Delaware Sen. Ted Kaufman; U.S. Rep. Mike Castle; Terri Kelly, president and CEO of W.L. Gore & Associates; Laurence Seidman, Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics at UD; Ernie Dianastasis, chairman of First State Innovation; Conrado (Bobby) M. Gempesaw II, dean of UD's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics; and William Latham, co-director of UD's Division of Business and Economic Research.

Events on Nov. 10 will include a talk on “Advancing Delaware Economic Development” by Alan Levin, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office. Also that morning, three concurrent workshops will be presented on “Green Prosperity” with Collin O'Mara, secretary of Delaware's Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control; “Delaware's Entrepreneurial Advantage” with David Weir, director of UD's Office of Economic Innovation & Partnerships (OEIP); and “Jobs for the New Economy” with John McMahon, Delaware secretary of labor.

Also scheduled on Nov. 10 is a plenary roundtable on “Strategies for Delaware Economic Growth," including Joseph DiPinto, director of economic development in Wilmington; Levin; Ed Ratledge, director of UD's Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research; Dennis Rochford, president of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay Authority; Pete Schwartzkopf, majority leader in the Delaware General Assembly's House of Representatives; and F. Gary Simpson, minority leader in the state Senate.
