This week, a special two-day conference, “Sustainable Delaware 2010,” will look at how to design walkable, healthy and sustainable communities to address these major issues facing America today.

“Sustainable Delaware 2010,” scheduled Sept. 22 at the Virden Center in Lewes and Sept. 24 at Clayton Hall in Newark, is looking at the topic of sustainability from three perspectives: land use pattern reform, renewable energy, and energy efficiency.

Sponsored by the AIA Delaware, in partnership with UD's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, Delaware Sea Grant College Program and several other organizations, the conference is involving design professionals in a variety of areas from architecture to landscape design to historic preservation to public policy. Leading scientists, designers, planners and policy makers are expected to attend.

The Sept. 22 Lewes program will include a keynote address by Collin O'Mara, secretary of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, on “Walkable, Compact Mixed-Use Communities as Integral to Long-Term Sustainability.”

The day also will feature panels on “Land Use Planning as Integral to Sustainability,” “Greening the Community: Urban Reforestation, Natural Stormwater Management and Summer Heat Island Mitigation,” “Traditional Neighborhoods for Walkability, Health and Historic Preservation” and “Community-Scale Renewables and Efficiency.”

UD speakers include James Falk, associate director of Delaware Sea Grant Program; Joe Farrell of the Delaware NEMO Program and Sea Grant Program; Eric Jacobson, policy scientist in the Institute for Public Administration; and William Ullman, professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.

Keynote speaker for the Sept. 24 program in Newark will be Patrice Frey, deputy director of the Sustainability Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

John Byrne, Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, will speak during the morning on “Living in the Greenhouse: The Sustainability Challenge.”

Other activities during the day will include presentations on “Recent Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Architecture,” “Policy Challenges” with Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and other state and federal officials; and “Green Code, and Health and Health Care Costs.”

Also at the Newark event, AIA Delaware will present its 2010 Sustainability Award to former Delaware Gov. Russell W. Peterson.
