4:12 p.m., Aug. 5, 2010----Delaware high school students are invited to share their love of the coast and what they do to conserve it by entering the 2010 Coast Day Video Contest. The contest, which is in its second year, is open to any high school student in Delaware who is enrolled in grades 9-12 as of the 2010-11 academic year.

The theme for the University of Delaware's 2010 Coast Day is “Making the Most of Our Coast,” and entrants are asked to submit a short video on a variation of this theme. Videos may be animations, photo slide shows, or live action, and students are encouraged to share how they make the most of their coast and what they do to help keep Delaware's coast a great place to be.

Videos will be featured on the Coast Day website and Delaware Sea Grant College Program's YouTube channel. Contest winners will receive prizes and recognition at this year's Coast Day, which will be held Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Del.

“Every year I encourage my marine biology students to attend and be involved in University of Delaware's Coast Day,” Paris Crockett, a marine biology teacher at Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, Del., said of the contest. A group of his 11th- and 12th-grade students won the contest last year for their video on the theme of “Climate Change and Our Coast.”

“Caesar Rodney Earth Club sponsor, Mrs. Stokes, and I felt that the contest would be a great opportunity for our students to creatively tackle an important issue in our local environment,” Crockett said. “I used the contest as a platform to illustrate to students how Delaware's rising sea level will threaten animal habitat in our estuary ecosystem, and winning the contest brought pride and joy to all the students, parents, and teachers involved.”

The winning entry will receive a Flip Video camcorder, while runners-up will receive camera store gift cards valued at $100 for second prize and $50 for third prize. Winning students and their teachers also will be recognized through news releases to the media.

Coast Day, an annual educational festival and showcase for Delaware's rich marine resources, is held on the first Sunday in October at UD's Lewes campus. Sponsored by UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) and Delaware Sea Grant, Coast Day attracts more than 10,000 visitors and has won state and national awards for its efforts to promote environmental education and stewardship.
