The Department of Public Safety was originally accredited in November 2007. The accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support service.

A CALEA assessment team will arrive on Saturday, Aug. 28, and spend the next couple of days examining the Department of Public Safety's compliance with the prescribed standards. The CALEA assessors are Assistant Chief Thomas Engells from the University of Texas at Houston Police Department and Sgt. Edward Farmer from North Carolina State University Police Department.

Once the assessors complete their review at UD, they report back to the full commission, which will then determine if UD is to be granted re-accredited status.

As part of the on site assessment, UD personnel and the public are invited to comment on the Department of Public Safety's ability to comply with CALEA's standards at a public information session.

The public information session will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, in the Alumni Lounge of the Perkins Student Center on Academy Street in Newark. Individuals will have the opportunity to learn about the accreditation processes and address their comments to the assessment team. Individuals who are unable to attend the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment tea may do so by telephone. The public may call (302) 831-8129 between 2 and 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29. This phone line will only be available during this time period.

Individuals who wish to offer written comments to the CALEA assessment team may mail the comments to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, suite 320, Gainesvill, VA 20155; Attention Ms. Maya Mitchell, Program Manager.
