Presentations

Suzanne Burton, associate professor of music, led a best practice panel discussion with graduate student Brian Bersh and colleagues from New York University and Penn State on the topic "The Role of Inquiry in Undergraduate Music Education" at the Society for Music Education Symposium held at the University of North Carolina Greensboro on Sept. 11. Also at the symposium, Burton was a panelist at a best practice session on “School-University Partnerships: Multiple Lenses on Practice” and, with Bersh, presented a research poster on "Music Education: Is it Time to Go with the Flow?”

Rudi Matthee, Distinguished Professor of History, presented "Neither East, Nor West, Iranian: The Historical Roots of Iran's Quest for Self-Sufficiency," at the Iran and Historiography in Comparative Perspective international conference, University of St. Andrews, Scotland, Sept 10-13.

Publications

Rebecca Knight, associate librarian, Reference Department, University of Delaware Library, wrote "African-Americans in Delaware, 1890," Delaware Library Association Bulletin, Summer 2009.

L. Rebecca Johnson Melvin, librarian, Special Collections Department, University of Delaware Library, is the co-editor of a new book, An American Political Archives Reader, published by Scarecrow Press, 2009. In addition to serving as the book's co-editor, she is the author of a chapter titled "Appraisal of the John J. Williams Papers" and co-author of a second chapter titled "Describing Congressional Papers: A Progression of Access Tools."

Matthew S. Weinert, assistant professor of political science and international relations, published "From State Security to Human Security” in Ethics and International Affairs, Ashgate, September 2009.

Abby Donovan, assistant professor of art, had a photograph entitled Fugue Channel (now we allow the sea to gaze at itself), featured in ITCH, a South African periodical featuring literature and visual work.

Cihan Cobanoglu, associate professor of hotel, restaurant and institutional management, was co-author with Mehmet Erdem and Natasa Christodoulidou, of an article in the September issue of Lodging, “Mission Critical: Point-of-Sale Systems Have Become Vital to Hospitality Operations.”

Chandra L. Reedy, professor at the Center for Historic Architecture and Design, "Seeing History: Rediscovering the Art of Tibet Through Modern Imaging Technology," Glimpse: The Art and Science of Seeing Vol. 22, No. 2, pp. 56-67, 2009 (special issue on China Vision).

Service

Lawrence Nees, professor of art history, recently traveled to the United Kingdom twice in connection with his service, since 2003, on the Advisory Committee for the installation of the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The new galleries will open on Dec. 1.

Awards

Danna Young, assistant professor of communication, is the recipient of the 2009 Alpha Lambda Delta Excellence in Teaching Award. The members of Alpha Lambda Delta selected Young based on her outstanding commitment to teaching, on her exemplary performance in the classroom, and on the positive and lasting impact she made on her students.

Kathleen Kerr, director of Residence Life, has been selected as a 2010 American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Educational Leadership Foundation Diamond Honoree.
