Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, in an Oct. 5 BusinessWeek article about GM chairman Edward E. Whitacre Jr. Elson also was quoted in an Oct. 1 News Journal article about the announced retirement of Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis. "Given what's happened, I think it's probably best for the bank and its shareholders that new leadership be brought in," Elson said.

Edward Ratledge, director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, was quoted in an Oct. 2 Vineland (N.J.) Daily Journal article about New Jersey residents moving to Delaware. “Taxes are a particularly good reason since property taxes are relatively low in Delaware and commuting to Cherry Hill and Philadelphia is reasonable,” Ratledge said, adding, “The cost of housing is also decidedly less.”

Margaret Andersen, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology, was quoted in an Oct. 2 News Journal article about the late Princess Diana, subject of an exhibition at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Willett Kempton, professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, was quoted in an Oct. 1 Salisbury (Md.) Daily Times article about wind power in Delmarva coastal communities. Kempton also was cited in a Sept. 27 EV World article about Delaware taking a role as a leader in vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology.

Susan Barton, assistant professor of plant and soil sciences and Cooperative Extension specialist, was quoted in a Sept. 29 Associated Press article about gardening as fall sets in and frost threatens. "A lot of people are sort of tired of their garden. Once it stops producing they just want to forget about it. While you can do that, you allow all of those fungal spores to overwinter, and insects, too," she said.

Carol Vukelich, L. Sandra and Bruce L. Hammonds Professor in Teacher Education and director of the Delaware Center for Teacher Education, and Peggy Bradley, director of UD's Early Learning Center, were quoted in a Sept. 29 News Journal article about a multimillion dollar U.S. Department of Education Early Reading First grant to help training teachers at early learning centers.

William Innes Homer, H. Rodney Sharp Professor Emeritus of Art History, was featured in a Sept. 29 News Journal article about his book The Paris Letters of Thomas Eakins.

Edward Ratledge, director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, was quoted in a Sept. 29 News Journal article about how the recession is reshaping the state's labor force. "Someone who moves out of construction into the service sector will see a decrease in wages," Ratledge told the newspaper.

Saul Hoffman, chairperson of the Department of Economics, was quoted in a Sept. 27 News Journal article about the effects of recession on poor residents of Rehoboth Beach. “It's extremely severe. I'm not sure (minorities) are facing a depression, but their situation is much worse than other populations,” he said.

Douglas C. Miller, associate professor of oceanography, was quoted in a Sept. 27 News Journal article about oil spills along the Delaware River.

Bill Wilson, a UD alumnus who heads the conservative Americans for Limited Government and is a critic of the policies of President Barack Obama, was featured in a Sept. 25 article in The New York Times.

The University was cited in a Sept. 25 article in The New York Times about college admissions and the economy. In the article, a New York guidance counselor noted that applications for out-of-state public universities, like Michigan and Delaware, are on the rise.
