Publications
Ashley John Pigford, assistant professor of art, has recently published an article in MATRIX: A Review for Printers and Bibliophiles. This publication is significant because it is printed entirely with letterpress, a traditional method of printing text created by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century, in a very limited edition of 700. The article, titled "Raven Press: An Education in the Making," details the history and current educational purpose of Raven Press at the University of Delaware, the University's fully-functional letterpress facility operated by Pigford and William Deering, assistant professor of art, in the Department of Art.
Also, Pigford recently published an article in Baseline: International Typographics Magazine, which is considered to be one of the premier international periodicals devoted to typography and graphic design. The article, titled "Visual Communications at the University of Delaware,” describes how, the University of Delaware visual communications curriculum offers “an educational experience where students learn principles of communication design through active engagement with analogue processes and material exploration toward the development of students' individual creative methodologies." The article also describes how both Raven Press and the visual communications London Study Abroad Program are integral components of the undergraduate visual communications BFA degree program. Numerous examples of student work accompany the text of the article.
Farley Grubb, professor of economics, "Testing for the Economic Impact of the U.S. Constitution: Purchasing Power Parity across the Colonies versus across the States, 1748-1811," at City University of New York Graduate Center, New York City, Oct. 13, 2009.
Service
David S. Weir, director of the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships, has been selected by the National Center for Research Resources to serve on the National Advisory Research Resources Council. Council members advise NCRR on its policies and programs, and review grant applications.
Exhibitions
Ashley John Pigford, assistant professor of art, is currently exhibiting two pieces of "kinetic sculpture" at the Delaware Center of Contemporary Art in Wilmington. The exhibition, titled "SHIFT: Kinetic Sculptures," will run through Nov. 19.
Also, Pigford exhibited a new piece of artwork in the "Visual Fringe" exhibition, as part of the inaugural Wilmington Fringe Festival and the New Wilmington Art Association exhibition. Pigford's work involves four clock radios that have been significantly altered electronically to “perform” a lecture by John Cage.
