8:11 a.m., Nov. 20, 2009----In the spirit of raising awareness on World AIDS Day, the University of Delaware LGBT Community Office will host a screening and panel discussion of the documentary film House of Numbers at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Room 120 Smith Hall.

Panelists will include Brent Leung, director of the film, David Syner, producer of the film, Diane Herson, associate professor in UD's Department of Biological Sciences, and Daniel McCormick, physician's assistant working with AIDS patients.

The discussion will be moderated by Jessica Schiffman, assistant director of the UD Women's Studies Program.

House of Numbers explores the myths and realities of HIV/AIDS presented through the lens of director Brent Leung, who interviews prominent HIV discoverers, doctors, researchers, and others in an attempt to get at the core of the international HIV/AIDS crisis and make his own assertions about the virus and the disease.

A representative of the LGBT Community Office said that the hosting of this film in no way means that the office or any of its cosponsors supports the notions the film purports. The LGBT Community Office presents this film as a forum for open dialogue and discussion among the community about an issue very real and present in everyday lives and one that is sometimes taken for granted.

The screening and discussion are cosponsored and supported by the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Center for Black Culture, SCPAB, Wellspring, the Sexualities and Gender Studies Program, HAVEN, HOLA, the Black Student Union, the Employee Wellness Program, Uganda Untold, and the Women's Studies Program.

World AIDS Day was first commemorated on Dec. 1, 1988. An international day dedicated to raising awareness about HIV and AIDS, it began as an idea from two public information officers for the World Health Organization's Global Programme on AIDS, now UNAIDS.
