12:42 p.m., March 30, 2010----The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) at the University of Delaware will host its first research symposium from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 9, in Clayton Hall on the UD campus in Newark.

The day will begin with a continental breakfast and networking session, followed by opening remarks by DENIN Director Donald L. Sparks and Mark Barteau, senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives at the University of Delaware.

DENIN faculty affiliates from departments across the University will give talks about their latest research endeavors. The day will end with a poster and networking session.

The DENIN research symposium will be an annual event.

“The goal of the first event is to showcase the wealth of environmental research that is ongoing around campus and in our partner institutions,” said Sparks. “It provides an excellent opportunity for faculty, students, and postdoctoral researchers to meet each other and forge interdisciplinary partnerships.”

DENIN Dialogue Series

The institute will also inaugurate the DENIN Dialogue Series this spring.

The program will bring environmental science and policy experts to campus to discuss leading environmental challenges with University participants and the community at large.

Sandra Postel, director of the Global Water Policy Project and freshwater fellow at the National Geographic Society, will give the first lecture at 7 p.m., Monday, May 10, in Mitchell Hall. Her talk will be entitled “Water is Life -- New Strategies for a Water Stressed World.”

In addition, Postel will meet with University of Delaware faculty and students on Monday and Tuesday, May 10-11.

DENIN seminars

In addition, DENIN will co-host seminars in April and May with several UD departments.

Cynthia Rosenzweig, senior scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia University and a member of the DENIN external advisory board, will give a talk entitled “Climate Change and Agriculture: Current Issues” at 1 p.m., Friday, April 30, in Room 132 Townsend Hall. The talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.

Nita Sahai, a professor of aqueous geochemistry and biominerals at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will give a presentation entitled “Did Toxic Minerals Drive Bacterial Cell Wall Evolution?” at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 6, in Room 201 of the Delaware Biotechnology Institute.

Sahai will give a second talk at 1 p.m., Friday, May 7, in Room 233 Townsend Hall, entitled “Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Carboxylic Acid, Amino-Acid and Peptide-Mediated Crystal Nucleation and Growth of Calcite and Apatite.”

Pedro Sanchez, director of the Tropical Agriculture and the Rural Environment program, director of the Millennium Villages Project at The Earth Institute at Columbia University and a World Food Prize laureate, will give a talk entitled “Ending Hunger in Africa through Science-Based Policies” at 1 p.m., Friday, May 14, in Room 116 Gore Hall. The talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.
