V2G is technology that allows plug-in battery operated vehicles to charge from the main power grid and to discharge their stored power to the grid based on demand signals.

Willett Kempton, professor of marine policy in the University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, leads the V2G research on campus. UD is a partner in the Mid-Atlantic Grid Interactive Cars Consortium.

“Electric vehicles are going to be part of the transportation future of our country, particularly for fleet situations, where vehicles are used during the day, usually driven less than 35 miles a day and parked overnight. The energy efficiency and reduced pollution of electric powered vehicles are strong drivers in having this technology adopted broadly,” said Rick Dovey, president of the Atlantic County Utilities Authority. “It will not be how far the battery will take you, but how available the battery charging stations will be that will push the movement of these vehicles in our region. It is our hope that these charging stations will lay the foundation of this infrastructure in the Atlantic City region.”

Also on hand at the July 16 event from UD will be Rachael Hurley, a 2008 graduate now working toward a master's degree in the College of Education and Public Policy, who is serving as an intern with Noveda Technologies, a real-time energy monitoring company that will be showcased.
