1:48 p.m., Jan. 20, 2010----Neal A. Phillips, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems, died on Dec. 9, 2009, after a long battle with colon cancer.
Mr. Phillips was born Sept. 24, 1947,and grew up in Claymont, Del. He graduated from Claymont High School in 1965 and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware.
Mr. Phillips went on to earn a J.D. from Villanova University Law School and a master's degree in taxation from Temple Law School. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and received an honorable discharge.
Mr. Phillips joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in February 1978 and taught business law in the Lerner College of Business and Economics for 30 years before retiring in 2008.
He was much beloved by his colleagues and many students who enjoyed his good humor and enthusiasm for teaching. Mr. Phillips also engaged in the private practice of law in Wilmington and Newark for many years.
Although he spent most of his life in Delaware, Mr. Phillips and his wife, Donna, moved to the Finger Lakes region of New York in 2005 in anticipation of his retirement. There, he built a log home of his dreams on Owasco Lake with the help of his brother Kirk and enjoyed spending time with family and friends and playing with his boxer, Philly.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife of four years, Donna Phillips; his mother, Viola Phillips; daughters: Cari Anne Phillips and her husband, Marcus Phillips, and Ashley Fields and her husband, Greg; grandsons Mason and Gannon Phillips; brother Kirk Phillips, sister Karen Wittland, and his former wife, Sandi Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father, Stan Phillips.
Family and friends of Mr. Phillips joined on Dec. 21, 2009, in Claymont for a celebration of his life.
