The two 19-year-old students were walking along Hillside Road near Apple Road in Newark, when a car stopped alongside them. The passenger in the car engaged the students in conversation, then told them not to move, implying he had a gun. The driver approached the students and patted down the pockets of both. He removed a cell phone from one of them, got back into the car and drove off. The students were not injured.

The victims were able to provide police with a vehicle description and registration number. About 20 minutes later, a Newark Police office on patrol saw the car, a 2008 Toyota Corolla, on Elkton Road, near Amstel Avenue. He stopped the car and the occupants were identified as the suspects in the robbery. Both were taken into custody.

Arrested were Howard B. Johnson Jr., 22, and Earl Holt, 25, both of Dover. Neither is a UD student. They were in town attending a dance at the University. They were each charged with one count of first degree robbery, one count of first degree attempted robbery and second degree conspiracy. They were released on unsecured bond after making an initial court appearance.
