12:35 p.m., Dec. 11, 2009----The University of Delaware Research Office and the Office of Graduate and Professional Education will host “Responsible Conduct of Research,” a two-day workshop for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, on February 2-3, 2010, in Trabant University Center.

The workshop, which was developed by Elizabeth “Missy” Peloso, UD's director of compliance, will provide information and instruction on a wide variety of topics relating to the proper conduct of research and an overview of University and federal compliance issues. Sessions and presentations on the effective preparation of job search documents, the patent process, authorship issues, public speaking, and researching funding opportunities will be presented.

Sandra Titus, director of the Intramural Research Program, Division of Education and Integrity, Office of Research Integrity, will deliver the keynote presentation on authorship in research.

“The responsible conduct of research is critically important to the University of Delaware and to the success of every faculty member, student, and postdoctoral researcher engaged in the process of discovery at UD,” said Mark Barteau, senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives. “Our UD workshop has been refined each year, and is well aligned with the new requirements for responsible conduct of research training now being implemented by Federal agencies such as NSF and NIH.”

“The wealth of information and best practices presented in these sessions will inform our graduate students and postdoctoral researchers while they are here at UD and in their future careers,” noted Debra Hess Norris, vice provost for graduate and professional education. “We are grateful to the Research Office and our expert speakers for their commitment to this important program and encourage our graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to attend They will be inspired.”

Through participation in the workshop, students will receive a notation of completion of the non-credit course modules on their transcripts.

Please note that NIH- and NSF-funded students need to attend and should register for sessions 1a (Introduction to RCR) and 3a (Regulatory Issues in Research) unless they have previously completed them and that the session on preparing for the job search is limited to students nearing the completion of their academic programs.
