3:07 p.m., Sept. 9, 2008----UD's 2008-09 Performing Arts Series has lined up a variety of exciting events that will showcase the best in live entertainment, including dance from contemporary to flamenco, chamber music with UD's violin virtuoso Xiang Gao, and a performance of folk tales from around the world to delight young children and the young at heart. With the exception of pianist Ingrid Fliter's performance, Jan. 16, all events will be held in Mitchell Hall.

The 2008-09 season includes:

Stone Soup and Other Stories (family performance), 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 14

Presented by the Pushcart Players, the Stone Soup is a blend of folk tales from around the world with dynamic, participatory and zesty entertainment. The show is recommended for ages 4 and up.

Folksay, 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26

Performed by the CityDance Ensemble of Washington, D.C., the program will feature Sophie Maslow's historic work, Folksay, set to a score by Woody Guthrie and a text by Carl Sandburg. The program also will include Brenda Way's On a Train Heading South.

Quasi Expressivo (Master Players Chamber Series), 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13

An evening of romantic music by Beethoven, Saint-Saens and others, which features cellist Kenneth Woods, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Kermit Poling, violinist Hongmei Xiao, harpist Annie Sullivan and violinist Xiang Gao, UD associate professor of music and Master Players artistic director.

Ingrid Fliter, pianist, 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, Roselle Center for the Arts

Acclaimed winner of the 2005 Gilmore Artist Award and internationally acclaimed pianist, Ingrid Fliter will offer a program including works by Chopin and Schumann.

Regina Carter, violinist, 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13

Winner of a MacArthur Foundation 'genius grant,' Regina Carter has had a highly successful career and revived interest in the violin as a jazz instrument. She will be joined by the other members of the Regina Carter Quintet.

Flamenco Vivo, 7 p.m., Sunday, March 1

Through a combination of music, dance and costume, Carlota Santana's company expresses Andalusian folklore, expressing the universal themes of pride, sorrow, love and passion.

Farewell, the My Guarneri Quartet (Master Players Chamber Series), 8 p.m., Friday, March 13

Formed in 1964, the My Guarneri Quartet, featuring violinists Arnold Steinhardt and John Dalley, violist Michael Tree and cellist Peter Wiley, has played in prestigious recital halls around the world and has been featured in radio and television specials.

Trio: Mediaeval, 8 p.m., Saturday, March 21

Acclaimed by critics and known worldwide for their music, three Scandinavian women sing medieval music from England and France, contemporary works and traditional Norwegian ballads and songs.
