8:05 a.m., May 7, 2009----Billy So, professor of history at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, will present a lecture on “Urban Cultures in Republican Beijing from a Historical GIS Perspective” at 5 p.m., Thursday, May 7, in Room 108 Memorial Hall.

So has written extensively on Chinese legal culture, historical geography, and institutional economic history. His books include Prosperity, Region, and Institutions in Maritime China: The South Fujian Pattern, 946-1368 and his recent research projects use historical GIS perspectives in studying Beijing and Shanghai.

The lecture is sponsored by the East Asian Studies Program and funding is provided by the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Art History, the Department of Geography, the Department of History, and the Office of Multicultural Programs.
