5:18 p.m., March 4, 2009----Students making plans for spring break should be aware that the U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert for Mexico in light of recent increases in violence there.

The alert, which may be read online by clicking here, notes that millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year, but that it is critical for travelers to understand the risk of travel there, how best to avoid dangerous situations and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim.

The alert recommends taking common sense precautions and also provides additional information on areas of the country currently experiencing violent conflict.
