10:21 a.m., Feb. 20, 2009----UD in the News provides a roundup of recent news items about the University of Delaware, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.
Mike Koplove, former pitcher for the Blue Hens, was featured in stories in the Feb. 20 Philadelphia Inquirer and the Feb. 17 News Journal. Koplove, who is from Philadelphia and played on the U.S. Olympic Team, is in training camp with the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Feb. 19 BusinessWeek story about a proposed settlement of claims by shareholders of Sovereign Bancorp that includes layoff protection for employees. “That's very unusual. The idea of a shareholder suit is to recoup value for shareholders,” Elson said.
Elson also was quoted in a Feb. 18 Associated Press story about General Electric's chairman and chief executive officer declining a bonus and performance awards, in a Feb. 18 Compliance Week story about corporate culture, and in a Feb. 17 ABC News story about Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli offering to work for $1.
Jack Townsend, director of UD's Bank of America Career Services Center, and UD seniors Christine Pan, Amanda Mihok and Katy Brodwater were cited in a Feb. 19 News Journal story about UD's Engineering and Information Management Job Fair and the job market.
Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a Feb. 18 News Journal story about state support for AutoPort, a company that plans to retrofit Toyota Scions to run on electric power using vehicle-to grid, or V2G, technology developed by Kempton's research team at UD.
Kempton also was quoted in a Feb. 17 story in The New York Times about electric cars and the grid. “I would say that electricity is a vastly superior fuel for the light vehicle fleet,” he said.
Laurence S. Seidman, Chaplin Tyler Professor of Economics, was quoted in a Feb. 18 Associated Press story about federal stimulus funds and their impact on the state.
Ralph Begleiter, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence, was quoted in a Feb. 18 Dallas Morning News story about Department of Defense policy concerning the release of photographs of flag-draped coffins of service men and women at Dover Air Force Base. “The question is whether the American people as a whole should be allowed to assess the cost of war. They can't do that if the major cost is invisible to them,” Begleiter said.
Begleiter also was quoted in a Feb. 17 Washington Post story and a Feb. 14 New York Times story and cited in a Feb. 16 Forbes opinion piece on the topic.
John Ratliff, a UD alumnus, was featured in a Feb. 18 Kennett Paper story about his business, Appletree Answering Service.

The interview was first broadcast on KOKC 1520 AM in Oklahoma City on Feb. 14 and can be heard on the Web.
