RecycleMania is now under way and will run through Saturday, March 28, and the entire campus community is encouraged to participate by recycling paper, bottles, cans and corrugated cardboard.

“The biggest support that the students, or any person on campus, could provide is to participate in the on-campus recycling program,” said Ryan Boyer, marketing manager for UD Dining Services, one of several University organizations involved in RecycleMania.

“Our success as a whole will be determined by the individual actions that all of us at the University take to ensure that we are recycling each and every plastic bottle, piece of paper or other recyclable that we can. To compete with the other participating schools, we must make recycling a habit,” Boyer said.

RecycleMania at the University of Delaware is being sponsored by Dining Services, Residence Life, Facilities/Grounds and Custodial Services with the support of the Office of Communications and Marketing, the Office of the Executive Vice President and the Graphics Communications Center.

Boyer said RecycleMania is an important part of the University's Path to Prominence strategic plan, in which UD has identified as one of its milestones the Initiative for the Planet.

Throughout the competition, the University will be reporting all of its recycling weights for paper, bottles, cans and corrugated cardboard. UD also will submit its single stream recycling weights.

Boyer said each Dining Services campus location currently participates in the on-campus recycling program and will continue to do so throughout the competition. Aside from normal recycling procedures, he said the majority of Dining Services' participation will be based on raising the awareness for on-campus recycling and ensuring this heightened awareness carries over into the final results for RecycleMania.

Dining Services will be keeping track of the University's progress in the competition by posting a tracking meter on its Web site that will show information to date and ranking in the competition.

Also, information on recycling totals can be found at the RecycleMania Web site.

This is the third year UD has participated in the event, which began in 2001 as a competition between Ohio University and Miami University of Ohio, and has grown tremendously each year since.

Each year since the inception of the competition, the number of entries has grown substantially. This year, there are 510 participating institutions.

RecycleMania is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program and the National Recycling Coalition, and is coordinated as a project of the National Recycling Coalition's College and University Recycling Council.

The Coca-Cola Company is a major sponsor of RecycleMania.
