12:48 p.m., Feb. 6, 2009----A gaggle of furry mascots will invade the Bob Carpenter Center as part of the festivities when the University of Delaware men's basketball team takes on powerful George Mason University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest on Thursday evening, Feb. 12.
Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. as the Blue Hens try to defeat a George Mason team that is among the conference leaders.
UD, which is led by Jawan Carter, Alphonso Dawson and Marc Egerson, all averaging double figures in points per game, has won three straight home games following a thrilling 73-70 overtime victory against Drexel on Feb. 4.
The game against George Mason will be televised nationally on ESPNU and Blue Hen fans are encouraged to come dressed in school colors. Several lucky fans dressed in blue and yellow-gold will be selected the winners of special prizes.
The mascots will add to the festivities as they join the University of Delaware's own YoUDee for a birthday celebration.
YoUDee, who turns 15, is already a member of the Mascot Hall of Fame and recently brought home a national championship from the 2009 Universal Cheerleading Association and Universal Dance Association National Championships, held Jan. 16-18 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Joining YoUDee will be several former University of Delaware mascot team members now working as mascots for professional sports teams.
They include Ryan Hughes, BE '99, who is the Philadelphia Eagles' Swoop; Christopher Bruce, BE '02, who is Reggie of Raymond Entertainment Group; Brandon "Summy" Willliams, AS '03, who is the Baltimore Ravens' mascot Poe; Frank Ventresca, BE '04, who is the Philadelphia Eagles' AirSwoop; Nicholas Tennant, BE '07, who is the Durham, N.C., Bulls' Wool E. Bull; Kevin Giambi, CHEP '08, who is the Washington Capitals' Slapshot; and Corey Inganamort, BE '08, who is the Washington Nationals' Screech.
Also joining in the fun will be Rocky Bluewinkle of the Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball team.
The YoUDee mascot program is coordinated by Sharon Harris, assistant director in UD's Office of Communications and Marketing.
