3:53 p.m., Dec. 22, 2008----An introductory course required of freshmen in the University of Delaware's business administration program had a special twist this fall, according to Christine T. Kydd, associate professor of business administration in the Lerner College of Business and Economics.
Kydd said the course, BUAD 110, introduces students to all basic areas of business throughout the semester.
What made this semester's course different was that students worked on several assignments that came straight from the Exelon Generation Co. as a partner company to the course.
The generous support of Exelon recently enabled the University to open the Exelon Trading Lab in Purnell Hall.
Designed to replicate the trading floors in investment banks, brokerage houses and hedge funds on Wall Street, the 2,200-square-foot laboratory contains 16 classroom workstations, as well as four research room workstations and real time feeds to two tickers and four LCD displays.
As part of their assignments, the students had to forecast what the power needs would be for Exelon and also determine how best to meet that load given different power options and costs.
The class had guest speakers from Exelon four times during the semester who provided an overview of the firm and information on the logistics and finance areas of Exelon.
The students worked in teams of 4-6 students to generate and develop ideas about how to help Exelon go green.
At the end of the term, corporate representatives came and judged the projects. They selected winners from 17 discussion sections and then chose the top four projects from those finalist groups.
The four winning teams were invited to Exelon headquarters in Kennett Square, Pa., where they were given a tour of Exelon's corporate trading floor
Following are the winning teams:
Best overall, geothermal project -- Sabrina Grasso, Tucker Clinton, Mike Cook, Quinn Daly and Taylor Geib.
Most creative, jet stream turbines -- Alex Bondroff, Colton Salazar, Katie Folwell, Emily Rossberg, Rebecca Weimer and Brian Rodowicz.
Most practical, Exelon green card -- Ken Donahue, Sinead Diamond, Hannah deJesus, David Walmsley, Allyson Connell and Lou DeMello.
Most polished presentation, bright side of energy -- Lindsay Burkhalter, Jessica Hector, Amy Stein, Sean Snyder and Brian Volk.
